If so, make a habit of wiping your entranceway every day. In Japan, people say that “happiness comes through the front door.” Wiping the entrance floor makes the air flowing through the house seem lighter. If so, then it makes sense that keeping our entranceways clean will increase our good fortune. Perhaps this small space is really a place for purifying our minds. At the same time, it instills in us a respect for our home as a sacred place. Keeping our entrance spotless can give us the confidence that comes from knowing we have nothing to hide. (For some reason, this habit tends to inspire philosophical insights like these.) She realized that seeing dirt in her entranceway had been making her feel like a failure. Similarly, when we pass through the entrance to our home, it removes all the grime we collect during the day.Īnother client observed that cleaning her entranceway helps wipe away feelings of guilt and shame. “It’s like the gateway to a Shinto shrine.” She was right! This seemed rather disrespectful, however, so instead I decided to empty my thoughts of everything but polishing the entranceway. I see!
